Visualising graphic scenes of physical torment is a key tactic in the struggle for emotional self-control played out in Seneca's Letters. Drawing on the finely honed traditions of Roman rhetoric, Seneca turns the celebration of edifying examples and the rehearsal of possible future misfortunes into a theatre of gruesome scenes (the burnt hand of Mucius, the reopened wound of Cato, the beast-fighter gagging on a toilet-sponge). This approach might seem wholly at odds with the deployment of visualisation in modern psychotherapies. But might they actually have something important in common?
