Lecture | Peter Fibiger Bang (Kopenhagen) "Beyond the postcolonial - Rome and the world history of empire"
Most theories of empire have been shaped by the experience of Western colonialism. But western overseas empires represent an unusually short and unstable phase in the long history of imperialism. For a short optimistic moment, it looked as if empire was a thing of the past. That hope has now been disappointed and we must move beyond this formative episode, as postcolonial as it was Eurocentric, to probe the contours of a deeper and wider world history to understand the present and the future.
