Welcome to the August-Boeckh-Antikezentrum
The August-Boeckh-Antikezentrum (August Boeckh Centre for Antiquity) initiates and coordinates interdisciplinary activities and projects in research and teaching in Classics and other antiquity-related subjects within Humboldt-Universität.
The Centre communicates to the wider public the progress and outcomes of research on topics of Greco-Roman antiquity at Humboldt-Universität. It also advertises other events on topics of antiquity in Berlin and Potsdam.
The August-Boeckh-Antikezentrum was founded in 2005 along with the Sonderforschungsbereich 644 „Transformationen der Antike“ (Collaborative Research Centre „Transformations of Antiquity“). In 2007 the Centre contributed to the foundation of the Excellence Cluster „TOPOI“.
The Centre is named after August Boeckh (1785–1867), one of the first classicists at the (then) University of Berlin. In his lectures and publications, especially the Encyklopädie und Methodologie der philologischen Wissenschaften, August Boeckh promoted the comprehensive study of antiquity in its entirety, thus becoming one of the founding fathers of interdisciplinary research and teaching in Classics.
